State-ranked Rattlers stay on roll, move to 7-0; GHS boys cross country regional-bound

Posted

SPORTS ROUNDUP

If they keep this up the Tolar Rattlers just might post the best season in the history of the program. The seventh-ranked Rattlers remained unbeaten (7-0 overall, 3-0 in District 5-2A Division I) with this past Friday’s 50-7 home drubbing of De Leon.

An excited Tolar head coach Jeremy Mullins said, “7-0 is better than 6-0! De Leon had a good game plan and gave us some problems in the first half. I was proud of our guys coming out after half and getting back to attacking things one play at a time. Isaac Blessing did a great job of stepping in at QB this week.”

Blessing completed nine of 13 passes for 86 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown to Matt Behrens. He also rushed six times for 64 yards and a TD.

Peyton Brown carried 17 times for 172 yards and three scores. For the season he now has 1,352 yards rushing and 21 TD.

Garrison Nation also rushed for a TD. Cade Moody led receivers with four catches for 34 yards.

Defensively Mason Berry led with 11 tackles, two sacks and a tackle for loss. Keaton Morrison had seven tackles, three for a loss, and scored on a blocked punt. Other standouts were Drake Owens (11 tackles, two for loss), Ty McClure and Cash Clark (8 tackles each) and Luke Willmon (6 tackles, 2 for loss).

On Friday the Rattlers now travel to Bangs (5-2, 3-0), which has won five consecutive games. The Dragons feature running back Guy Powell (1,360 yards, 14 TD). They are coming off a 42-35 overtime win at San Saba.

A win would clinch a playoff berth for the Rattlers.

“It's going to take a good effort and a week of preparation. Bangs is on a roll right now. They've got a dang good running back that can break a big play on any down,” Mullins said. “It will be a big challenge for us defensively to slow him down. Our guys have done a great job of keeping our focus in getting a little better every day and playing better this week than we did the week before.”
