Woman jumps from SUV just before it careens into lake

A fluke accident Monday afternoon on Lake Granbury resulted only in an injured wrist — but potentially could have been a life-threatening situation.

A 46-year-old woman from Joshua told Granbury Police that a floor mat got stuck on the accelerator pedal of a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee that she was driving near the boat ramp in the 900 block of East Pearl Street in Granbury. As the SUV was headed toward the lake, the woman was able to open the door and jump out to avoid being in it when it entered the water.

GPD Deputy Chief Cliff Andrews told the HCN in a news release that the vehicle ended up approximately 70 yards out into the water during the incident, which was first called in to 911 dispatch at 3:39 p.m. The woman told officers she had gone there to eat lunch at the boat ramp area.

“The driver stated the floor mat became stuck in the accelerator,” Andrews stated. “The driver could not stop the vehicle and jumped out of the vehicle as it accelerated into the water. The driver injured her wrist when jumping from the vehicle. No further injuries were reported.”

No damage to the dock was reported. Andrews added that the Hood County Sheriff’s Office assisted on the call, and officers from the Brazos River Authority assisted a tow company with the retrieval of the SUV from the water.
