Keep Houseplants Thriving During Vacation

(Family Features) Surrounding yourself with beautiful, leafy houseplants can make you feel like you’re on a permanent tropical vacation. However, those same plants can create problems in the event you schedule a real getaway. Consider these simple tips to keep your houseplants alive and thriving while you’re away:

Adjust the temperature: Just as humans need extra hydration on hot days, so do houseplants. Move all your plants to a spot where there is no direct sunlight and just a medium amount of light exposure. This can help prevent the soil from drying out. Also, avoid the urge to turn the air conditioner off completely.

Keep them moist: Soak your houseplants well before you leave town. You don’t want their roots standing in water, so make sure the soil has proper drainage.

Make a mini greenhouse: Group your houseplants together then cover them with one clear plastic bag. The bag will act as a mini greenhouse, keeping the moisture and humidity levels high underneath. Cut two or three small slits in the bag so air can circulate.  

Don’t fertilize: Growing plants need lots of water, sunlight and attention. Avoid fertilizing in the weeks leading up to your vacation so they are growing as slowly as possible while you’re away.

You could also ask a friend or hire a professional to tend to your leafy houseplants while you’re away, if you’re concerned. Succulents and cacti should only be watered once every week or two, so they should be fine during shorter vacations.
