Local K9 unit aids in capture of suspect

Local law enforcement officials on Sunday arrested a 34-year-old man who was wanted on multiple criminal arrest warrants after he fled from them — eventually finding him hiding among some trees with the help of the Hood County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit.

Justin Lynn Hassell, was placed in the Hood County Jail with misdemeanor bonds totaling $7,000. He also is facing a second-degree felony charge on a burglary of a habitation count, which currently has no bond set.

A news release from the Sheriff’s Office states that the, “Hood County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist Brazos River Authority to search for Justin Lynn Hassell, who had out-of-county felony and misdemeanor warrants for his arrest.”

The release noted that Hassell “ran from BRA officers at the DeCordova Bend Dam Park and into the Brazos River Authority Restricted Area, where they were able to set up a perimeter quickly.”

The K9 Unit “was able to narrow the search area, resulting in a deputy locating and taking (Harrell) into custody after finding him hiding in a group of trees within the perimeter that had been establshed.”

The news release states that Hassell was facing the following misdemeanor charges, in addition to the felony warrant: assault causing bodily injury — family violence warrant (Class A, $3,000 bond); interfering with an emergency call (warrant, Class A, $3,000 bond); and criminal trespass (Class B, $1,000 warrant.
