Pirates improve to 3-0 with district opening win

Granbury topped Waco 17-14 on Friday, Sept. 8 in the Pirates' homecoming and the District 4-5A Division I opener for both teams.

Quarterback Hayden Meyer passed for 104 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown to Carter Riley, and rushed for 76 yards with a 19-yard TD. Weston Cantrell's 36-yard field goal in the first quarter gave the Pirates a 10-0 lead and was ultimately the difference in the game.

Defensive end Chase Cantrell paced the Pirates defense with 10 tackles, including one for a loss. Linebacker Rylan Brenish posted nine tackles with a fumble recovery and safety Josh McGinnis had eight and an interception returned 49 yards.

The Granbury defense limited Waco to 36 passing yards and only 1-of-8 on third-down conversions. The Pirates converted six of a dozen third downs and were 1-of-1 on fourth down.

The Pirates (3-0, 1-0 in district) travel to Cleburne (0-3, 0-1) on Friday, Sept. 15 to take on the Yellow Jackets, who lost 37-13 to Killeen on Friday. Cleburne has lost 15 straight games dating to 2021.
