GISD to start strength and conditioning, sports camps on June 13

Posted

Granbury and area athletes looking to improve overall coordination and athletic skills have got a great deal coming their way with the GISD’s Summer Strength and Conditioning Camp.

Unlike sports-oriented camps like football and baseball, summer strength and conditioning camp offers various training options.

Rather than spanning three or four days, summer strength and conditioning is from June 13 through July 29. At the cost of just $20, it’s a bargain.

The camp’s low cost is a biproduct of head football coach/boys athletic director Chad Zschiesche wanting more chemistry between coaches and players. Previously a company had been hired to run the camp, and of course, that came along with a higher price for students – and having someone else work with their athletes wasn’t creating the bonds coaches like to see.

What sealed the deal was Johnny Rositas III, a retired U.S. Marine Corps first sergeant who was working for the hired company but was also on staff as an instructor for the Granbury Marine Corps JROTC.

Unlike the scary Marine Corps basic training instructor depicted in the classic film “Full Metal Jacket,” Rositas is an infectious motivator. Athletes love to live up to the challenges Rositas and the GHS coaches provide weekly.

Granbury’s summer strength and conditioning will have three sessions with different age groups. The day will start at 7 a.m. until 8:15 a.m. for boys in grades 10-12. The second session will be from 8:15 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. for girls (grades 9-12) and freshmen boys. The final session is set for 9:30 a.m. through 10:45 a.m. for boys and girls in grades 7-8.

Before strength and conditioning camp, there are youth baseball and football camps set for June 7-9. The baseball camp will have sessions from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. for grades 1-4 and from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for grades 5-9. The cost of the camp is $60.

The football camp will also break down by age groups with grades 5-7 from 8-10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. for grades 1-4. The cost of the camp is $60.

Soccer and softball camps open on June 13, and planning was done so that freshmen can still attend strength and conditioning camp if they so choose.
